Nail Trend: The Negative Space Mani

Bi-annually at Fashion Week designers dictate the shapes and colours of our future wardrobes and determine what shoe and bag we will be listing over next season, exciting stuff! Yet, I am equally as excited to see what hair and make-up looks the creative heads backstage are working on each season as these shapes and colours also have an impact on the cosmetics offerings we will be trying and buying.

Nails are always big news backstage at Fashion Week, with ample coverage dedicated to what colours, textures and designs that will be trending next year. Amongst the muddy neutrals, metallics, (never-ending, not complaining) nude fever and textural offerings for Fall/Winter 2014, one of my most favourite and innovative nail looks was the Negative Space mani.

If you keep up to date with nail trends then you may have seen as few snaps of this look on Pinterest and Instagram. It challenges every flawless, glossy manicure I have  ever had in a sort of abstract, undone and very modernistic way.

Stylelobster Tips

The key to the Negative Space mani is 10, well shaped nails; oval, squoval and square all work well with this look just make sure your ten digits are matching so as not to challenge the un-symmetrical nature of this design

  • Opt for a nude or neutral grey as the base of this mani
  • Pair with black and navy for fall winter. A monochrome palette works too with this look.
  • Invest in a nail art pen or fine paint brush and some nail tape (ebay)
  • Before you start decide what shape you will be painting on each nail.
  • Start with your lightest colour first and finish with the darkest to avoid overloading the nail with polish
